Hans Gabriel is a Professor in the German Studies program within the Division of Liberal Arts at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. He has taught language and culture courses ranging from first-year college German to advanced courses on 19th- and 20th-century German-language literature and culture. His pedagogical approach emphasizes student empowerment through written/oral expression and interdisciplinary connections to the arts.
- Education: PhD and MA in German Language & Literature from the University of Virginia; BA in German & Spanish from UNC-Chapel Hill

Gabriel's research centers on German-language Realism, narrative theory, and the works of authors such as Grillparzer, Musil, Hofmannsthal, and Stifter. His scholarship bridges literary analysis with pedagogical innovation, particularly through participation in NEH Summer Seminars and Fulbright advisory roles.
Awarded both the UNC Board of Governors’ Excellence in Teaching Award (May 2015) and the UNCSA Excellence in Teaching Award (January 2015), Gabriel remains actively engaged in academic organizations including the Modern Language Association, American Literary Translators Association, and Austrian Studies Association.
