Hans Brix is a Full Professor and Head of the Department of Biosciences at Aarhus University. His primary affiliation is within the Department of Biology - Aquatic Biology under the Faculty of Science. He holds a PhD and specializes in plant ecophysiology, freshwater ecology, and wetland management. His research focuses on aquatic plant ecophysiology, biogeochemical cycling in wetlands, and the application of constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment. He collaborates internationally on projects addressing water pollution control and climate change impacts.
Key honors include the Order of the Dannebrog (Knight), Honorary Professorship at Qingdao Institute of Marine Geology, and the John P. Laborde Endowed Chair. He leads 25+ research projects, including the Sino-Danish Center for Environmental Research and the WATERUN initiative targeting urban water runoff solutions. His work emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches linking ecological theory with practical environmental engineering.
Teaching responsibilities span plant physiology, aquatic ecology, and environmental science at all academic levels. He has organized international PhD courses in South America, Southeast Asia, China, and Europe, focusing on plant-based wastewater treatment technologies.
