Mireille Martens is a Lecturer and Researcher at HZ University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands, specializing in water technology and environmental science. She holds a Bachelor’s in Psychology (Belgium), a degree in Aquatic Ecotechnology from HZ, and a Master’s in Environmental Science from Halmstad University (Sweden), focusing on wetlands.
Her research emphasizes the application of constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment, desalination pre-treatment, and urban climate adaptation. Notable projects include leading the TKI Wetlands project (2019–2021) to reduce biofouling in desalination systems and the OP Zuid initiative to enhance climate resilience in Middelburg and Vlissingen via blue-green infrastructure. She also coordinates work package 4 of the Interreg Flanders-Netherlands Aquatuur project, exploring freshwater availability through wetlands.
As part of the Water Technology group, she teaches modules on Ecological Water Quality, Hydrology, and Advanced Water Technology. Beyond HZ, she collaborates with a Belgian wetland design company on projects like the Horizon 2020 Multi Source initiative (campsite wastewater reuse) and the H2pOwer project (riparian plant roofs for water purification).
Her work bridges academic research, practical education, and industry partnerships, focusing on sustainable water solutions for urban and industrial challenges.
