Erica Young holds dual roles as Affiliate Professor in the School of Freshwater Sciences and Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Her expertise spans ecophysiology, nutrient cycling, and microbial interactions in aquatic ecosystems. With a PhD in Algal Physiology (Monash University, 1999) and BSc Honors in Plant Biochemistry (University of Western Australia, 1988), her research focuses on phosphorus acquisition in freshwater organisms, viral impacts on nutrient dynamics, and algal applications in wastewater treatment.
Her work investigates microbial communities in pitcher plants, invasive species effects on wetlands, and climate-driven changes in decomposition processes. Key projects include modeling bacteria-virus interactions in Lake Michigan and developing integrated systems for bioenergy recovery from wastewater. She collaborates on projects exploring global microbiome dynamics and diatom-driven ecological processes.
Research highlights include studies on Cladophora epiphytes, dreissenid mussel impacts, and nutrient limitation in carnivorous plants. Her lab employs physiological measurements, molecular techniques, and ecological modeling to address complex environmental questions.
