Hans Blumenberg (1920–1996) was a professor of philosophy at the University of Münster from 1970 until his retirement in 1985. His work redefined modernity’s place in historical and philosophical discourse, challenging the secularization thesis and emphasizing human self-assertion against theological absolutism. He explored myths, metaphors, and the interplay between religion, politics, and intellectual history.
Blumenberg studied philosophy, German studies, and classical philology after being forced to abandon Catholic theology studies in 1940 due to Nazi racial policies. His seminal work The Legitimacy of the Modern Age (1976) argued that modernity emerged as a humanistic response to medieval theological frameworks, reshaping secularization debates.
His research spanned philosophy, intellectual history, and religious studies. He critiqued concepts like 'secularization' and 'modernity,' analyzing myths, metaphors, and symbolic systems. Blumenberg’s work influenced interdisciplinary studies, particularly at the University of Münster, where the 'Hans Blumenberg Visiting Professorship' honors his legacy.
Key contributions include studies on metaphor theory, narrative structures, and the limits of human cognition. He belonged to prestigious academies, including the Mainz Academy of Sciences, and co-founded the 'Poetics and Hermeneutics' research group. His interdisciplinary approach bridges philosophy, literature, and theology, cementing his status as a major 20th-century thinker.
