Hans Blumenberg (1920-1996) was a renowned German philosopher and professor at the University of Münster from 1970 until his retirement in 1985. His work redefined the understanding of modernity, challenging the secularization thesis and advocating for the modern era as an act of human self-assertion against medieval theological absolutism. Key contributions include his seminal work The Legitimacy of the Modern Age and studies on myths, metaphors, and the history of concepts.
Blumenberg’s research focused on interdisciplinary themes such as the philosophy of history, cultural anthropology, and the interplay between religion and modernity. He was a member of the Mainz Academy of Sciences and Literature and co-founder of the Poetics and Hermeneutics research group. His academic career was interrupted in 1940 due to Nazi racial laws, forcing him to abandon Catholic theology studies and later pursue philosophy, German, and classical philology.
His legacy includes influencing debates on secularization and modernity through his conceptual history and philosophical analyses. The Cluster of Excellence’s Hans Blumenberg Professorship at the University of Münster honors his interdisciplinary contributions to religion and politics research.
