Hannah Winther

Hannah Winther is a Research Fellow at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies. Her work focuses on moral philosophy with specializations in bioethics, animal ethics, empirical ethics, and Wittgensteinian ethics. She is part of the CRISPRWELL project, which examines ethical and regulatory challenges of genome-edited animals. Additionally, she serves as an editor for the philosophy series at publishing house H//O//F and contributes regularly to Norwegian media like Morgenbladet.

Winther holds a PhD from NTNU and Copenhagen University with her dissertation on the ethics of genome editing in farmed salmon. She also earned dual MAs in Science and Technology Studies (University of Oslo) and philosophy (Erasmus Mundus program across five universities), along with a BA in philosophy from the University of Oslo. Her competencies include animal ethics, Wittgenstein studies, and interdisciplinary ethical analysis.

Her research explores the moral implications of biotechnology, particularly genome editing in aquaculture, and emphasizes the need for ethical attention to animals' moral standing. Recent publications address naturalness concepts in CRISPR debates, the ethics of relating to farmed salmon, and Wittgensteinian approaches to moral attention.

Winther's outreach activities include radio appearances (e.g., NRK's 'Etikketaten'), lectures at philosophy festivals like På Kanten, and public talks on topics ranging from AI's linguistic gender biases to climate activism. She has participated in interdisciplinary projects such as the CRISPRWELL initiative and co-authored numerous translated philosophy works through H//O//F.
