Hannah Demeritt

Hannah Demeritt is a Clinical Professor of Law and Supervising Attorney at the Health Justice Clinic at Duke University School of Law. She holds a J.D. with high honors and membership in the Order of the Coif from Duke Law School (2004) and a B.A. from Reed College (1992). Her career spans clerkship with the Honorable Robin Hudson, solo practice representing indigent criminal defendants, and advocacy in juvenile delinquency cases. She has been a full-time member of Duke Law's faculty since 2011, teaching courses in legal ethics, criminal justice ethics, and health law clinics.

Demeritt's work focuses on social justice lawyering, legal ethics, and clinical legal education. As Supervising Attorney in the Health Justice Clinic, she trains students in offsite legal assistance and emphasizes ethical obligations in public interest law. Her practice history includes criminal defense, juvenile advocacy, and the landmark JDB v. North Carolina case, which was decided in her client's favor by the U.S. Supreme Court. She is admitted to practice in North Carolina and the U.S. Supreme Court.

Demeritt actively contributes to legal education through courses such as The Law of Lawyering: The Ethics of Social Justice Lawyering, Criminal Justice Ethics, and Health Justice Clinic. She is affiliated with the American Bar Association's Professional Responsibility section, the North Carolina Academy for Justice, and the North Carolina Gay Advocacy Legal Alliance.
