Hanna Vorholt

Dr. Hanna Vorholt is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of History of Art at the University of York. She holds a MA from the Courtauld Institute of Art and a PhD from Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, and is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. As Director of the Medieval Art and Medievalisms Research Cluster, her research focuses on early media technologies (e.g., illuminated manuscripts), medieval encyclopedias, maps, diagrams, and Jerusalem's representation in medieval art and architecture. She is currently writing a Leverhulme-funded book, Images on Lines: Ruling and Illumination in Medieval Manuscripts. Her publications include Shaping Knowledge: The Transmission of the Liber Floridus (2017) and co-edited volumes on Jerusalem’s medieval imagery.

Her research explores mechanisms of knowledge production in medieval manuscripts, with a focus on illuminated texts like the Liber Floridus. Recent work examines ruling lines and illumination techniques in manuscripts, linking them to broader medieval visual and intellectual frameworks. Collaborative projects include AHRC-funded studies on music sources and ERC-funded research on Jerusalem’s visual translations.

Awards include the DAAD Scholarship (2000) and Munby Fellowship (2006-2007). She supervises PhD students in medieval art, such as Aikaterini Perdiki (Greek/Latin maps) and Cher Casey (reliquaries). Teaching includes courses on medieval book arts and Jerusalem’s artistic legacy.
