Hanna Maria Schwank is an Assistant Professor of Economic History at the Department of Economics, University of Bonn. She is also an Associated Member of the ECONtribute Research Cluster, a Research Affiliate of the Institute of Labor Economics (IZA), and collaborates with the Collaborative Research Center Transregio 224. In Spring 2025, she will be visiting the University of Houston.
Dr. Schwank received her PhD in Economics from Boston University in 2022, following a B.Sc. in Economics and M.Sc. in Public Economics from Free University Berlin. As a Fulbright Alumna, she has established herself as a promising researcher in Labor Economics, Economic History, and Gender Economics.
Her research focuses on how individuals react to major economic shocks, determinants of domestic migration, and women's roles in the labor market. Specific areas include the gender pay gap, female labor force participation, internal migration patterns, and climate change effects. Her work combines historical analysis with contemporary economic challenges to address issues relevant to people's everyday lives.
Dr. Schwank's publications examine important economic phenomena with empirical rigor, including hiring dynamics related to gender gaps, educational impacts of childhood migration in Indonesia, and long-term economic consequences of the 1906 San Francisco Fire. Her research on urban fires has been featured in the ECONtribute Wirtschaftspodcast.
At the University of Bonn, Dr. Schwank teaches Growth and Development Economics at the Master's level and supervises theses in applied microeconomics with empirical focus. She maintains an active academic presence through professional networks and social media, sharing insights about labor economics and economic history research.
