Professor Han Baltussen is a distinguished academic in the history of philosophy, holding the W.W. Hughes Professorship of Classics at the University of Adelaide's School of Humanities. His work focuses on ancient Mediterranean intellectual history, with expertise in philosophical doctrines, commentaries, and their evolution from Homer to late antiquity. He has authored 10 books and co-edited volumes on topics such as Simplicius, Aristotle's school, and pain narratives in antiquity. His recent projects include a Loeb edition of Eunapius and studies on self-consolation and ancient medicine.
Educations: B.A. and M.A. in Classics, Utrecht University (1988); Ph.D. in Ancient Philosophy, Utrecht University (1993). Postdoctoral roles included positions at the Centre for Hellenic Studies (Washington DC), Utrecht University, and King's College London. He served as Head of Department (2009–2013) and on the Classical Studies Section of the Australian Academy of the Humanities (2017–2020).
Research interests span intellectual history, transmission of ideas, and public engagement with themes like grief, censorship, and Stoicism. His current projects explore ancient consolations, doxography, and collaboration on medical gender studies. Awards include fellowships at Harvard, Princeton, and the Institute of Classical Studies in London.
He supervises Masters/PhD students and serves on advisory boards for journals like Studies in Late Antiquity and the ERC Project 'Fragments of Aristotle.' His interdisciplinary work bridges ancient thought with modern relevance, emphasizing the enduring value of classical scholarship.
