Halvor Knutsen is a Professor at the University of Agder's Department of Natural Sciences. His research focuses on connectivity, microevolutionary patterns, and mechanisms underlying genetic diversity in marine species. He leads international and national projects funded by the EU, Norwegian Research Council (NRC), and Nordic Council. Current projects address climate change impacts on evolutionary genetics and marine conservation.
Knutsen's work integrates genetics with ecological data, examining spatial patterns in species like Atlantic cod, Baltic cod, and Fucus vesiculosus. He collaborates with institutions like IMR Flødevigen, NIVA, and CEES to build marine research groups. His projects emphasize larval dispersal, habitat connectivity, and the effects of environmental changes on marine populations.
Publications highlight themes such as genetic monitoring, hybridization dynamics, and conservation challenges. Key studies include the BioTIME biodiversity database expansion and the role of eDNA in marine conservation. Knutsen has supervised numerous graduate students and contributed to fisheries management strategies, including lobster reserve efficacy and stock assessment.
He actively participates in interdisciplinary projects, combining genomic analysis with biophysical modeling to address ecological and conservation questions. Current efforts aim to improve understanding of how genetic diversity and spatial dynamics influence species resilience under climate change.
