Rebekah Oomen is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of New Brunswick (UNB), based in Saint John. Her research focuses on genomics, conservation biology, and evolutionary processes, with a particular emphasis on understanding the genetic basis of species adaptation to environmental changes. She leads projects under initiatives like the European Reference Genome Atlas (ERGA), contributing to equitable biodiversity genomics through reference genome sequencing of understudied species.
Her work spans diverse taxa, including marine species like Atlantic Bluefin Tuna and terrestrial organisms such as the Spanish Moon Moth, addressing topics like climate resilience, intraspecific diversity, and conservation prioritization. She also explores the application of genomic tools in conservation policy and sustainable development.
Key contributions include software like FishSizer for larval fish size measurement and publications on genomic reaction norms in Atlantic cod under warming conditions. Her research highlights the intersection of genetics, ecology, and conservation, with a focus on translating genomic insights into practical conservation strategies.
