Haim Avitsur serves as Associate Professor of Trombone at The Hartt School, University of Hartford since 2016, where he maintains an active profile as a performer, educator, and recording artist specializing in trombone repertoire spanning classical, contemporary, and world music traditions.
His academic credentials include:
- Master of Music, Mannes School of Music
- Bachelor of Music, Mannes School of Music
Avitsur's artistic research centers on expanding trombone performance boundaries through innovative interpretations of Baroque works (particularly Bach adaptations) and contemporary compositions by Israeli artists. His work with the New York Brass Arts Trio demonstrates exceptional chamber music sensitivity typically associated with string ensembles, merging Classical, Light Classical, and Classical/Jazz repertoires through meticulous brass instrumentation.
His discography, highlighted by the 2024 release "To My Father, Eitan / Mostly Bach Vol. XXVII", reveals consistent exploration of trombone's expressive capabilities across historical periods and cultural influences, with particular emphasis on solo performance and cross-genre fusion.
As an educator, Avitsur founded and directed the Summer Trombone Workshop (2005-2021), providing comprehensive training for trombonists of all ages and skill levels. His mentorship extends to classroom instruction at The Hartt School, shaping emerging musicians through technical development and performance practice.
He maintains an active performance career as founding member of the New York Brass Arts Trio alongside trumpeter Joe Burgstaller and French hornist David Jolley, pioneering new approaches to brass chamber music that have redefined ensemble expectations in the field.
