Haidee Wasson serves as Distinguished University Research Professor and Associate Dean of Faculty Development and Inclusion in Concordia University's Faculty of Fine Arts, where she previously held leadership roles including Associate Dean of Research and Area Head of the Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema. Her internationally recognized scholarship focuses on material and cultural dimensions of film technologies, particularly portable formats like 16mm.
Her educational foundation includes a PhD from McGill University, complemented by prior teaching positions at Harvard University's Visual and Environmental Studies Program and the University of Minnesota's Cultural Studies and Comparative Literature Department.
Dr. Wasson's research interrogates intersections of feminism, film historiography, and media technologies through lenses of museology, cultural institutions, and emergent media. She pioneers studies on portable film projectors' societal impact across domestic, industrial, and military contexts, while advancing critical curatorial frameworks for understanding cinema's evolution.
Her publication trajectory reveals consistent innovation in media archaeology, with recurring examinations of 16mm film's cultural permeation from 1920s domestic spaces to contemporary digital transitions. This body of work bridges historical analysis with theoretical rigor across film studies, design history, and cultural anthropology.
Major recognitions include:
- Katherine Singer Kovacs Best Book Award for 'Everyday Movies'
- Multiple Krasna-Krausz Book Award nominations
- American Library Association Outstanding Academic Title designation
Currently directing a 5-year SSHRC-funded project on small-format film technologies' creative impact, she has secured significant research funding while mentoring graduate students and shaping institutional policy through Senate and Board of Governors service. Her administrative leadership spans faculty development, inclusion initiatives, and research strategy across Concordia's arts ecosystem.
