Prof. Hafen Ernst is a Full Professor for Developmental Genetics at the Institute for Molecular Systems Biology (IMSB), ETH Zurich. He previously served as Director of ETH Zurich (2005-2006) and held professorial roles at the University of Zurich (1997-2005). His research focuses on Genetics, Signal transduction mechanisms in Drosophila, Insulin signaling pathways, and the interplay of Nutrition with Cell size and Growth regulation.
- Education:
- PhD (unspecified)
- Postdoctoral Research (1984-1986) with G.M. Rubin at UC Berkeley
- Research Assistant (1983) with W.J. Gehring at Biocenter Basel
His work explores fundamental mechanisms of developmental genetics using Drosophila as a model organism, with emphasis on insulin signaling's role in growth control. He has pioneered studies on nutrient-dependent regulation of organ size and metabolic homeostasis.
Awards include the Friedrich-Miescher Prize (1991) and Prix Mondiale Nessim-Habif (1999). He is a member of EMBO and Academia Europaea.
