Dr. Anissa Kempf is a Tenure-track Assistant Professor at the University of Basel's Biozentrum since 2021. Her research investigates the cellular and molecular basis of sleep using Drosophila melanogaster as a model organism.
- PhD in Biology (ETH Zurich, 2008-2014)
- MSc in Biology (ETH Zurich, 2006-2008)
- International Diploma in Biology (Imperial College London, 2005-2006)
- BSc in Biology (ETH Zurich, 2003-2007)
Her work focuses on molecular sleep-wake regulation, mitochondrial signaling in neuronal circuits, and sleep homeostasis. Key research areas include:
- Drosophila sleep induction mechanisms
- Neuronal activity fluctuations during wakefulness
- Lipid peroxidation memory systems
- Gut-brain immunity interactions
- Neurodegeneration in sleep disorders
Recent publications examine mitochondrial roles in sleep pressure and intestinal regulation of feeding behavior. Her team employs genetics, electrophysiology, and optogenetics to study these processes.
Scientific Honors
- ERC Starting Grant (2022)
- EMBO Long-Term Fellowship (2016-2018)
- Fulford Junior Research Fellowship (2015-2018)
- Willi Studer Prize (2008)
Dr. Kempf's laboratory includes 5 doctoral students and 3 postdoctoral researchers, with technical support from David Ruel and Abigail Gex-Collet. Her research has significant implications for understanding sleep disorders and developing novel therapeutic approaches.
