Habiba Gitay is an Honorary Associate Professor at the ANU Institute for Climate, Energy & Disaster Solutions (ICEDS). With a 35-year career spanning research, education, and international development, she holds a BSc (Hons) and PhD in Ecology from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth. Her research focuses on ecosystem dynamics in grasslands, forests, and wetlands, with a strong emphasis on climate resilience and adaptation strategies.
- Prior roles include Senior Technical Staff at the World Bank (16 years), designing climate-resilient projects in Pacific Island Countries (Fiji, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu).
- International contributions: IPCC Coordinating Lead Author (Second and Third Assessment Reports), Vice Chair of GEF's Scientific & Technical Advisory Panel (2002-2005), inaugural Co-Editor-in-Chief of Climate Resilience and Sustainability.
- Current focus: Advancing climate-resilient development from community to national levels, mentoring professionals in climate resilience.
Research interests include ecosystem function, climate policy integration, and biodiversity conservation through initiatives like the UN Convention on Biological Diversity and Ramsar Convention. She has authored/co-authored over 20 technical reports and journal articles addressing climate adaptation frameworks, disaster risk reduction, and sustainable development pathways.
Key achievements include pioneering the Fiji Climate Vulnerability Assessment and co-editing landmark IPCC reports. Her work bridges science and policy, emphasizing practical implementation of resilience strategies in vulnerable regions.
