H. Robert Horvitz

H. Robert Horvitz is the David H. Koch Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), affiliated with the McGovern Institute for Brain Research and the David H. Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research. He is also an Investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. His research focuses on the genetic mechanisms underlying animal development, behavior, and programmed cell death, using the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans as a model system.

Education: PhD in Biology from Harvard University (1974), BS in Mathematics and Economics from MIT (1968).

Research Interests: Molecular pathways in development and behavior, genetics of programmed cell death, and their implications for human diseases such as cancer and neurodegenerative disorders.

Awards: Recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (2002), Gairdner Foundation International Award (1999), and numerous other honors recognizing his contributions to genetics and developmental biology.

Key Publications: Landmark studies on programmed cell death in C. elegans, including the identification of genes controlling apoptosis (e.g., ced genes). Recent work explores mechanisms of cell elimination, color discrimination in C. elegans, and synaptic dysfunction in mice.
