معرفی
Paul Sternberg is the Bren Professor of Biology and William K. Bowes Jr. Leadership Chair at the California Institute of Technology. He is affiliated with the Division of Biology and Biological Engineering, Department of Biology, where he has served since 1987. Sternberg is a Member of the National Academy of Sciences and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He previously served as an HHMI Investigator (1992-2017), and currently leads initiatives like the Gene Ontology Consortium, WormBase, and the Alliance of Genome Resources.
- Education: B.A. from Hampshire College (1978); Ph.D. from MIT (1984) under H. Robert Horvitz.
- Leadership Roles: Division Chair (2024-), Co-founder of BioEngineering graduate Option at Caltech.
Research Interests: Sternberg’s lab investigates how organismal properties—development, physiology, behavior—are encoded in nematode genomes. Key projects include neural circuit analysis in C. elegans, parasitic nematode biology, autism spectrum disorder gene variant studies, and automated biocuration tools. His work spans genetics, proteomics, optogenetics, and synthetic biology, with applications to human health and agriculture.
Publication Trends: Recent articles emphasize C. elegans neural mechanisms, Steinernema genomics, and bioinformatics infrastructure (WormBase, Alliance). Topics include pathway analysis algorithms, gene expression prediction, and FAIR data standards. Collaborative platforms like microPublication Biology and WormBook are frequently featured.
Scientific Awards:
- Thomas Hunt Morgan Medal, Genetics Society of America
- HHMI Investigator (1992-2017)
- National Academy of Sciences Membership
- American Academy of Arts and Sciences Fellowship
Advising and Grants: Sternberg has advised PhD students like Mark Zhang and collaborated with summer researchers. He leads major grants, including WormBase (1999-), Alliance of Genome Resources (2016-), and Gene Ontology Consortium. His lab developed cGAL drivers and co-founded experimental communication platforms.
Labs and Teams: The Sternberg Lab focuses on systems biology of nematodes, with projects on Steinernema hermaphroditum, C. elegans, and interdisciplinary initiatives (e.g., anti-bacterial catheters). Collaborations include WormBase, Textpresso, and Gene Ontology teams. Lab alumni include Aidyl Gonzalez and Sarah Torres, co-founder of Caltech Green Labs.
