Gwyneth Doland

Gwyneth Doland is a Professor of Practice in the Department of Communication and Journalism at the University of New Mexico (UNM). She teaches courses in news writing, media ethics, interviewing, and media management. She oversees the New Mexico Local News Fellowship and Internship Program, the department-run New Mexico News Port, and serves as Statehouse Faculty Champion, guiding student reporting at the New Mexico State Capitol. She is a Faculty Adviser for student chapters of the Society of Professional Journalists and National Association of Hispanic Journalists, and acts as the department’s Internship Coordinator. Additionally, she is a Faculty Affiliate at the R.H. Mallory Center for Community Geography.

Gwyneth holds a B.A. in Sociology and Anthropology from Earlham College and an M.A. in Journalism from Harvard University Extension School.

Her research interests center on political journalism, government accountability, and media ethics, reflecting her extensive career in alternative weekly papers, radio, TV, and online news. She currently serves as Senior Political Correspondent for New Mexico PBS, leading state legislative coverage, and contributes to New Mexico in Depth, KUNM News, and New Mexico Magazine. Her investigative work has included reports for the Center for Public Integrity, resulting in the 2012 State Integrity Report, a Goldsmith Prize finalist.

Her awards include the ACLU of New Mexico’s First Amendment Award and top honors from the New Mexico Broadcasters Association. Beyond academia, she has led nonprofit initiatives, including as Executive Director of the New Mexico Foundation for Open Government and founding director of the SPJ Rio Grande Chapter. She serves on advisory boards for Press Forward New Mexico and holds roles in the Journalism and Women Symposium and NAHJ New Mexico.
