Gwyneth Allatt is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Education at the University of Huddersfield, affiliated with the School of Business, Education and Law. She serves as Course Leader and Admissions Tutor for the Pre-service PGCE/Cert Ed (Lifelong Learning) programme. Her academic career began in Further Education, teaching local history, English, and adult literacy before transitioning to teacher education. She holds a Doctorate in Education (2019) focused on adult literacy education.
Her research expertise includes adult literacies policy and practice, education for older adults, and critical analyses of employability discourses in neoliberal contexts. She contributes to the editorial team of Research and Practice in Adult Literacies (RaPAL) and is a member of the Huddersfield Centre for Research in Education and Society (HudCRES). Gwyneth has presented at conferences on topics such as adult literacy education’s role in social inclusion and the intersection of employability and neoliberalism.
Her work addresses tensions between policy agendas and grassroots practices, emphasizing the socio-political dimensions of literacy education. Recent publications explore practitioner perspectives, learner experiences, and critiques of employability-driven education reforms.
