Dr. Gurmel Ghataora is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Civil Engineering at the University of Birmingham, where he also serves as Admissions Tutor and Welfare Tutor for postgraduate taught programmes. With over 40 years of experience in geotechnical engineering, his work bridges industry and academia, focusing on sustainable and innovative solutions in ground engineering.

Dr. Ghataora's research interests lie in geotechnical engineering, particularly in the use of marginal and recycled materials, ground improvement, soil stabilization, and railway track foundations. His work addresses critical challenges in infrastructure sustainability, including trench backfill design, migration of fines in ballast, and the utilization of waste materials like sewage sludge ash and plastic aggregates in construction. He has contributed extensively to understanding the behavior of soils under cyclic loading, especially in railway environments.
His recent publications (2015–2017) highlight a strong trend toward sustainable construction materials and infrastructure resilience. Key themes include the use of recycled aggregates, MIBA, and plastic in concrete; performance of stabilized subgrade soils; and drainage and degradation mechanisms in railway tracks. These works reflect a consistent focus on environmental sustainability, material efficiency, and long-term infrastructure performance.

He is actively involved in laboratory and field research, contributing to advancements in soil mechanics and pavement engineering. His work supports the development of more durable, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly civil engineering solutions.
