Gunilla Karlsson Hedestam is a Professor at Karolinska Institutet's Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology. She leads the Genetic basis for B and T cell recognition and function research group, focusing on adaptive immune responses and genetic variation in immune receptors. Her positions include a Distinguished Professor grant from the Swedish Research Council and ERC Advanced grant-funded research.
- Education: BSc from Uppsala University (1990), PhD from University of Oxford (1993)
- Postdoctoral work at Harvard Medical School (1994-1998), then returned to Karolinska Institutet as Associate Professor (2004) and became tenured Professor (2012).
Research interests span B/T cell receptor genetics, antibody responses to viral pathogens (HIV/SARS-CoV-2), and development of computational tools like IgDiscover for immune repertoire analysis. Her work emphasizes individual genetic diversity's impact on vaccine efficacy and immune responses.
Key grants include NIH, EU H2020, and Wallenberg Foundation funding. Notable awards include the Fenyö Prize (2024) and ERC Proof of Concept grants.
Her lab investigates vaccine-induced antibody maturation, neutralizing antibody lineages, and population-level immune variation. Collaborations span global institutions in vaccine development and immunogenomics.
