Sebastian Ols is a Postdoctoral Researcher at Karolinska Institutet's Department of Medicine, Solna, and a Postdoctoral Fellow in the King Lab at the Institute for Protein Design, University of Washington, Seattle. His work focuses on understanding cellular and molecular mechanisms for induction of broad anti-viral B cell responses through vaccination, with particular emphasis on how multivalent nanoparticle vaccine formulations enhance the priming of antiviral B cell responses.
Dr. Ols completed his doctoral studies at Karolinska Institutet in 2022 with a thesis titled "Cellular and molecular mechanisms for induction of broad anti-viral B cell responses through vaccination." Prior to this, he earned a Master of Science in Medical Biotechnology (2014-2016) and a Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology (2010-2014), both from KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden.
Dr. Ols' research centers on vaccine immunology, specifically investigating how B cell responses are modulated by nanoparticle vaccine formulations. His work examines how the breadth and potency of anti-viral antibody and B cell responses is affected by antigen display. A better understanding of how the immune system interacts with vaccines will allow for the rational selection of formulations that have the capacity to elicit stronger immunity and can be advanced into clinical testing. His studies provide information on vaccine antigen persistence, distribution, and the immunological steps for the onset of B cell responses to understand the generation of high-quality and durable antibody responses.
Analysis of Dr. Ols' publication record reveals a strong focus on vaccine development, particularly mRNA and nanoparticle-based vaccines. His research spans multiple viral pathogens including SARS-CoV-2, rabies, pneumoviruses, and yellow fever virus. A recurring theme in his work is the investigation of how vaccine platform selection affects B cell responses, antibody breadth, and neutralization capacity. His most recent work has expanded into protein nanocage design for improved immunogen presentation.
Dr. Ols has received several prestigious awards for his research, including:
- Dimitris N. Chorafas Prize 2023 - Awarded for pre-graduate scientific contributions within doctoral education
- Sven Gard Prize for Best Thesis in Virology at Karolinska Institutet in 2022
While Dr. Ols is actively contributing to multiple research projects as a postdoctoral fellow, there is no specific information available about students he is advising or grants he has secured as a principal investigator. His collaborative work spans multiple institutions including Karolinska Institutet, University of Washington, and various international research teams.
Dr. Ols is affiliated with the research group of Kristina Broliden at Karolinska Institutet, which focuses on "Identifying molecular signals in the genital mucosa that determine susceptibility to sexually transmitted infections." He also works in the King Lab at the Institute for Protein Design, University of Washington, which specializes in computational protein design for vaccine development and other biomedical applications.
