Dr. Getto's research pioneers Human-in-the-Loop AI applications in technical communication, with emphasis on community engagement and social impact. His methodology combines Participatory Action Research (PAR) with service-learning to develop locally relevant AI solutions while promoting digital literacy. As a first-generation college graduate from a low-income background, he champions democratic access to communication technologies through inclusive pedagogical approaches that bridge academic theory and real-world practice.
Analysis of his 2023-2025 publications reveals three dominant trajectories: (1) Generative AI frameworks for technical writing automation, (2) Social justice applications of UX personas in engineering contexts, and (3) Workforce skill evolution in post-pandemic technical communication. These threads consistently connect AI literacy with community empowerment, demonstrating how participatory design transforms both organizational structures and individual agency.
Dr. Getto actively mentors emerging scholars, including serving on Yvonne Kao's dissertation committee at East Carolina University. His extensive service-learning partnerships span homeless shelters, technical writing firms, and startups, where he applies content strategy to build organizational communication capacities. As Director of Mercer's Technical Communication Management program, he shapes curriculum that prepares students for AI-integrated professional environments.
He leads collaborative initiatives through the IEEE Professional Communication Society's AI Working Group and the Society for Technical Communication, focusing on developing interdisciplinary teams that merge technical communication expertise with engineering and social sciences to address community challenges through human-centered design.
