Guillaume SCHULL is a Senior Researcher and CNRS Director of Research (DR section 05) at the Department of Surfaces and Interfaces (DSI) within the Institute of Physics and Chemistry of Materials of Strasbourg (IPCMS) at the University of Strasbourg. His research focuses on hyper-resolved fluorescence microscopy and spectroscopy of individual atoms, molecules, ribbons and 2D materials using advanced experimental techniques including 4K Scanning Tunneling Microscopy combined with luminescence measurements (STML). He leads major research projects such as the ERC Advanced grant AETHER (2025-2030) and ANR GRAAL project (2023-2027).
Dr. SCHULL's research interests center on nanoscale optical phenomena at the atomic level. His work bridges quantum optics, surface science, and molecular electronics, with particular emphasis on STM-induced luminescence, single-molecule photonics, and quantum effects in 2D materials. His laboratory develops cutting-edge techniques to probe and manipulate light-matter interactions at unprecedented spatial resolution, enabling the study of fundamental quantum phenomena in individual molecular systems. His research has significant implications for future quantum technologies, molecular electronics, and nanoscale optical devices.
The analysis of his 15 most recent publications reveals a consistent focus on single-molecule optical phenomena, with increasing emphasis on topological effects in nanomaterials and quantum light emission. His work spans multiple prestigious journals including Nature family journals, Science, Physical Review Letters, and Nano Letters, demonstrating cross-disciplinary impact across physics, materials science, and nanotechnology. A notable trend is the progression from fundamental spectroscopic measurements toward controlled manipulation of quantum optical processes at the molecular scale.

Dr. SCHULL actively mentors students and researchers, welcoming Master's students, PhD candidates, and postdoctoral fellows to his laboratory. His research is supported by substantial competitive funding including multiple ERC grants, ANR projects, and regional funding from Alsace. His team operates at the forefront of nanoscale optical characterization, with equipment capable of ultra-low temperature (4K) STM measurements combined with high-sensitivity luminescence detection. Current research directions focus on developing single-molecule quantum light sources and exploring topological effects in graphene nanoribbons, with potential applications in quantum information processing and molecular-scale optoelectronics.
