Guido Parra Vergara is an Associate Professor at Flinders University's Biological Sciences Department within the College of Science and Engineering. He leads the Cetacean Ecology, Behaviour and Evolution Lab (CEBEL) and has held a full-time position there since 2014. His research focuses on marine mammal ecology, conservation biology, and behavioral studies, particularly on dolphin populations. Previously, he worked at James Cook University and the University of Queensland as a postdoctoral fellow, and with the South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI) through the Marine Innovations South Australia (MISA) program.
Education:
- BSc in Biology (Universidad de los Andes, Colombia, 1995)
- MSc in Natural Resource Management (James Cook University, 2001)
- PhD in Natural Resource Management (James Cook University, 2005)
Research Interests: Population ecology, behavioral ecology, and conservation biology of marine mammals. He employs methods such as behavioral observations, GIS, ecological modeling, and genetics to study dolphin behavior and conservation challenges. Key areas include habitat selection, social networks, and genetic diversity in coastal dolphin populations.
Awards:
- FUSIONARTE Award (2014)
- Flinders University Vice-Chancellor's Early Career Research Award (2011)
- University of Queensland Early Career Research Award (2007)
Professional Roles:
- Associate Editor for Marine Mammal Science
- Member of the International Whaling Commission Small Cetacean Scientific Committee
- Representative for the Southeast Asian Marine Mammal Association (SEAMMAM)
Teaching: Coordinates and lectures courses on ecology, marine mammals, and animal behavior at Flinders University, including BIOL2711 (Ecology) and BIOL3751 (Marine Mammals, Birds and Reptiles).
Labs/Teams: Leads the CEBEL lab, which integrates behavioral, ecological, and genetic approaches to study marine mammals and inform conservation strategies.
