Prof. Dr. Guido Hausmann is Professor of Eastern and Southeastern European History with a focus on Russia, the Soviet Union, and Ukraine at the University of Regensburg. He is Head of the History Department and also serves as Associate Professor at the Graduate School for East and Southeastern European Studies. He is affiliated with the Leibniz Institute for East and Southeastern European Studies (IOS), where he conducts extensive research and supervises doctoral candidates.
His research interests include:
- University and scientific history in Central and Eastern Europe
- Urban history, particularly of Odessa and other regional cities
- Empire and nationalities in the Tsarist and Soviet contexts
- Memory cultures and political cults of the dead
- Environmental and natural history of Eastern Europe
His recent publications reflect a strong engagement with Ukrainian history, the politics of memory, the Holodomor, and the legacies of war and empire. He frequently contributes to public discourse through lectures, media appearances, and editorial work. His scholarly output spans monographs, edited volumes, journal articles, and digital publications, often focusing on transnational and interdisciplinary approaches.
His notable scientific contributions include editorial roles in key volumes such as The Political Cult of the Dead in Ukraine and Das Erbe des Imperiums. He has also published influential articles on Brest-Litovsk, Odessa’s cosmopolitanism, and the instrumentalization of history in contemporary politics.
He has supervised several doctoral students, including Magdalena Daller, Sarah Grandke, Artur Hilgenberg, and Olha Martyniuk, among others. He is actively involved in major research projects, including those funded by the DFG, DAAD, VolkswagenStiftung, and Leibniz Association, focusing on Ukrainian statehood, digital humanities, and environmental history.
He leads and participates in interdisciplinary research groups on urban ethics, transnational history, and digital editions of historical sources. His work bridges academic scholarship and public history, making significant contributions to both scholarly understanding and societal debates on Eastern Europe.
