Prof. Dr. Katrin Boeckh is a Research Associate at the Institut für Ost- und Südosteuropaforschung (IOS) in Regensburg and holds an affiliated professorship at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU). She specializes in the history of Eastern and Southeastern Europe, with a focus on ethno-national conflicts, Soviet religious policies, and Ukrainian and Yugoslav history. Boeckh earned her M.A. (1991) and Ph.D. (1995) at LMU Munich, followed by habilitation in 2004. Her career includes roles as editor of Jahrbücher für Geschichte Osteuropas and senior researcher at the Osteuropa-Institut.

Research Interests: Boeckh’s work examines state-church relations under socialist regimes, late Stalinist institutions, and the discourse of values during political transitions. Her regional focus includes Ukraine, Yugoslavia, and the Balkans. Recent studies explore Soviet religious repression, the legacy of Pan-Slavism, and the geopolitical dimensions of historical memory.
Recent Article Trends: Her publications analyze Soviet-era religious policies, the impact of World War I and II on Eastern Europe, and the complex interplay between nationalism and religious identity. Key works include studies on the liquidation of the Greek Catholic Church in Galicia and the Vatican’s diplomatic reporting on Soviet repression.
Grants & Projects: Current projects include Forschungsstelle: Kultur und Erinnerung. Heimatvertriebene und Aussiedler in Bayern 1945-2020, funded by the Free State of Bavaria. Past projects include research on transnational networks of German-Russians and religious pluralism in Ukraine.
Labs/Teams: Affiliated with the IOS Institute in Regensburg and collaborates with international networks including the Collegium Carolinum and the Pontificio Comitato di Scienze Storiche in Rome.
