Gretel Rodríguez is Professor in the Department of History of Art and Architecture at Brown University, specializing in Roman art, architecture, and archaeology with secondary expertise in ancient Mesoamerican art. Her research investigates art-society relationships through themes of viewership, identity formation, and cultural interaction.
Rodríguez's scholarship examines Roman honorific monuments, captive iconography, Greek colonial ceramics, and Mediterranean water sanctuaries. Her fieldwork spans Rome, Bay of Naples, Southern France, and Chiapas, Mexico. Recent publications reinterpret the Roman Arch at Orange through postcolonial frameworks and analyze Iphigenia myth representations in funerary contexts.
