Professor Gretchen Larsen is a Professor in the Durham University Business School, specializing in interpretive and critical consumer research with a focus on consumption, marketplace cultures, and arts marketing. She holds leadership roles, including Co-Director (Business) of Durham's Institute of Advanced Study and former Faculty Lead for Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (2018–2021). Her research explores identity, sonic ecologies, and underrepresented consumption areas. She has published widely in top journals and co-authored Music, Markets and Consumption, and supervised nine PhD students.
- Education: PhD in Marketing from University of Otago (2003), MCom (1998)
- Leadership: Directed MSc programs at King’s College London and University of Bradford
- Service: Athena SWAN Bronze Award contributor, Chartered Association of Business Schools EDI Committee (2019–2022)
Research interests span critical arts marketing, sonic turn in consumer research, and cultural memory. Her work challenges gender norms in rock music and explores digital music fandom loyalty. Awards include the 2018 Athena SWAN Bronze Award.
Teaching focuses on consumer culture theory, marketing theory, and arts marketing. Advises on interpretive/critical marketing approaches for PhD students.
