Professor Gretchen Larsen is a leading scholar in interpretive and critical consumer research, focusing on consumption's intersection with marketplace cultures, arts, and sonic phenomena. She holds a professorship at Durham University's Business School and serves as Co-Director (Business) for the Institute of Advanced Study. Her research emphasizes marginalized consumer experiences and has shaped arts marketing through roles like founding co-editor of Arts Marketing: An International Journal. She has supervised nine PhD students and pioneered integrating Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) into Durham's Business School culture.
Education and Career: She has held roles at King’s College London (Director of MSc International Marketing), University of Bradford (MSc Marketing leadership), and University of Otago. She has also held visiting posts at EADA (Spain) and LKEAM (Poland).
Research Interests: Her work spans consumer identity, arts marketing, critical marketing theory, and sonic consumption. She explores how sound shapes affective market experiences and advocates for inclusive research methodologies.
Publications: Over 30 journal articles and book chapters, including co-authorship of Music, Markets and Consumption and influential pieces in Marketing Theory, European Journal of Marketing, and Organization.
Service Contributions: Leadership in EDI initiatives, including Durham Business School’s Athena SWAN Bronze Award (2018). She also serves on the Chartered Association of Business Schools’ EDI Committee.
Teaching: Specializes in consumption theory, arts marketing, and marketing education, with a focus on interpretive approaches. She has designed modules across undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
