Gretchen E. Potts

Dr. Gretchen E. Potts is a UC Foundation Professor of Chemistry and Department Head of Biology, Geology, and Environmental Science at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. She holds a PhD in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Florida (2000) and a BS in Chemistry from Miami University (1996). Her research focuses on analytical spectroscopy, forensic chemistry, environmental chemistry, and bioremediation, often involving undergraduate students. She teaches courses including General Chemistry, Quantitative Analysis, and Methods of Environmental Analysis. Dr. Potts has served in leadership roles such as Faculty Senate President and chairs committees including the Council of Academic Department Heads. She advises the Pre-Medical Society and engages in community outreach through initiatives like the Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy and the Chattanooga Donor Services.

Her research highlights include analyzing cigarette litter leachates, electronic cigarette components, and organic gunshot residues using techniques like ICP-OES and HPLC.
