Gregory Allen is a Professor of Piano at The University of Texas at Austin, affiliated with the Butler School of Music within the College of Fine Arts. He has been on the faculty since 1973 and holds a Master of Music from the Peabody Institute/Conservatory and a Bachelor of Music from Oberlin College/Conservatory. His research focuses on contemporary piano works by American, Chinese, and Turkish composers, as well as lesser-known early-20th-century composers like Medtner, Bowen, Roussel, and Severac.
Prof. Allen is a renowned pianist and chamber musician, having collaborated with groups like the Miró and Cavani Quartets. His recordings include works dedicated to Arthur Rubinstein and the complete piano compositions of Joaquín Rodrigo. He has adjudicated major competitions, including the Cliburn Foundation and New Orleans International Piano Competition.
His technical articles explore signal processing, sonar systems, and computational frameworks. Notable contributions include work on real-time sonar beamforming, distributed deadlock detection, and high-throughput process networks. Awards include the 1980 Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Competition Grand Prize and the 1978 Queen Elisabeth Competition Second Prize.
Prof. Allen’s pedagogical lineage traces back to Beethoven, Liszt, and Leschitizky via mentors John Perry, Jerome Lowenthal, and Leon Fleisher. He continues to teach piano and contribute to interdisciplinary research at UT Austin.
