Gregor W. Smith is the Douglas D. Purvis Professor of Economics at Queen's University, Canada. He holds a B.A. in History from Queen's University (1980), an M.A. with Honours in Economics from the University of St. Andrews (1982), and an M.Phil. (1984) and D.Phil. (1986) in Economics from Nuffield College, Oxford University, as a Rhodes Scholar.
His research focuses on empirical macroeconomics, international macroeconomics, and economic history. Notable contributions include work on inflation dynamics, fiscal policy shocks, and the historical analysis of exchange rates. He has held visiting positions at Princeton University (as a Fulbright Fellow), the University of Toronto, and the University of British Columbia, and served as a visiting scholar at the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta.
Smith has published extensively in top journals such as the Journal of International Economics, Canadian Journal of Economics, and International Economic Review. He is a Fellow of the Canadian Economics Association and served as its past president. His work has been recognized with the Bank of Canada Research Fellowship (2006–2015) and the Rhodes Scholarship.
His advising spans over two decades, with notable doctoral students advancing to roles in academia, central banks, and policy institutions. Research interests include inflation forecasting, international price dispersion, and macroeconomic policy design.
