Greg Irving is a Professor and Director of the Health Research Institute at Edge Hill University. He is an academic General Practitioner specializing in primary care research, particularly focusing on multiple long-term conditions and healthcare service delivery. Dr. Irving holds dual roles as a GP and Consultant in St Helens, where he leads an NIHR Primary Care Research Hub. He has secured over £9 million in external grants and has been recognized in Stanford's Top 1% of scientists globally in his field.
His academic background includes medical training at the University of Nottingham, postgraduate studies at Oxford and Liverpool, and a Global Clinical Scholar position at Harvard University. He has held significant roles such as NIHR Clinical Lectureship and NIHR Doctoral Research Fellowship. Dr. Irving is also Deputy Lead for the NIHR North West Coast Complex Intervention Theme.
Research Interests: Developing and evaluating complex interventions in primary care, systematic reviews, randomized trials, and qualitative research. He works with large datasets like UK Biobank and CPRD. Current projects include multimorbidity studies and healthcare use patterns.
Teaching: Fellow of the Academy of Medical Educators, leading the complexity and uncertainty theme in Edge Hill's MBChB program. His teaching focuses on global health, workplace-based training, and role modeling in medical education.
External Engagement: National Specialty Lead for General Practice in the NIHR Research Delivery Network, Deputy Chair of the NIHR Health and Social Care Delivery Research panel, and member of the Society of Academic Primary Care Executive Committee. He has contributed to WHO policy development and leads the UpCARE Fellowship program in Japan.
Awards: Yvonne Carter Award (2015), RCGP/SAPC John Fry Award (2021), and multiple recognitions for pandemic-related research. Over 70 policy reports contributed to organizations like WHO, OECD, and NICE.
