Professor Hazel Everitt is Professor of Primary Care Research in the Primary Care Research Centre, which is part of the School of Primary Care, Population Sciences and Medical Education within the University of Southampton. She also serves as Deputy Academic Capacity Development Lead for the NIHR School for Primary Care Research (SPCR). Clinically, she continues to work as a General Practitioner at the New Horizons Medical Partnership in Totton, Southampton.
Hazel’s research portfolio centres on improving primary-care delivery and patient outcomes through rigorous clinical trials, digital health innovation, and enhanced healthcare communication. Her interests include:
- Supporting patients’ self-management of long-term conditions.
- Optimising communication between clinicians and patients.
- Developing and evaluating internet-based support tools.
- Translating research evidence into everyday clinical practice.
She is currently Co-Chief Investigator on three major NIHR-funded trials: ATLANTIS (low-dose amitriptyline for IBS), TIP (digital communication training for practitioners), and ATHENA (amitriptyline to prevent post-herpetic neuralgia), and Principal Investigator on the DISCA programme developing a digital sleep intervention for children with ADHD.
Scientific recognition includes the RCGP Research Paper of the Year 2023 for the ATLANTIS trial, Fellowship of the Royal College of General Practitioners (2016), and the RCGP John Fry Award 2016 for outstanding contributions to general-practice research and publishing. She is also co-author of the Oxford Handbook of General Practice, now in its 5th edition.
Professor Everitt collaborates extensively across multi-disciplinary teams, working with colleagues in psychology, health economics, data science, and clinical specialties. She welcomes doctoral researchers and offers PhD opportunities within the vibrant Primary Care Research Centre environment.
