Grant Woods is a Lecturer in the Discipline of Music at Columbia University's Department of Music specializing in Historical Musicology. He received his PhD in historical musicology from Columbia University in May 2025 under Professor Julia Doe, following a Bachelor of Musical Arts from DePauw University (summa cum laude) and Master's degrees in historical musicology from Columbia.
Dr. Woods's research explores the British Empire's role in constructions of British musical identity during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, with particular focus on folk song revivalism. His dissertation, "'By Right of Inheritance': Empire and Identity in the First British Folk Revival," examines the ideological connections between folk revivalism and the British Empire. Additional research interests include musical exoticism/Orientalism, film music, propaganda, and Percy Grainger studies.
He has presented his research at national and international conferences including the North American British Music Studies Association and the American Musicological Society. Dr. Woods has taught Music Humanities since 2020 and served as Lead Teaching Fellow and Senior Lead Teaching Fellow at Columbia's Center for Teaching and Learning.
Professional leadership includes two terms as President of Columbia's Organization of Music Graduate Students (2023-2024) and service as Publishing Manager for Current Musicology (2020-2021). He currently serves as Programs Officer for the American Musicological Society, contributing to scholarly initiatives in the field.
