David Gutkin is a Lecturer in Music and Fellow at Columbia University’s Society of Fellows in the Humanities. He holds a PhD in historical musicology from Columbia University (2015). His research focuses on 20th- and 21st-century European and American music, emphasizing technologies mediating music (from notation to television), canon formation, historical memory, and national identity. Key repertoires include opera, jazz, serialism, minimalism, spectralism, and American popular music.

Research Interests: David explores antinomies of historical representation in American opera, jazz, and national memory. His work bridges music technology and cultural studies, analyzing how mediums like television and graphic notation shape musical expression and identity.
