Prof Graeme Fairchild is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Bath, affiliated with the Bath Institute for the Augmented Human. His research focuses on the neurobiological underpinnings of antisocial behavior, sex differences in psychopathology, and the impact of trauma on brain development. He leads major international projects like FemNAT-CD (studying sex differences in antisocial behavior across Europe) and ERABIS (investigating long-term effects of institutional deprivation on Romanian adoptees' brain development). His work also explores mechanisms of resilience in adversity-affected populations.
He completed his PhD in Psychiatry at Newcastle University (2004), focusing on glucocorticoid modulation of serotonergic pathways. He teaches Developmental Psychopathology and Biological Psychology modules in the undergraduate program.
Recent research highlights include:
- Linking antisocial behavior to brain development abnormalities in adolescents (covered in major newspapers)
- Discovering sex differences in neural responses to emotional stimuli in conduct disorder
- Identifying biomarkers of resilience in trauma-exposed individuals
Active grants include studies on trauma and cardiovascular disease in low/middle-income countries, and longitudinal analyses of childhood adversity impacts. He collaborates with institutions globally and contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to quality education and good health.
