Gordon Fitzell is a Canadian composer, improviser, and sound artist currently serving as a Professor at the Desautels Faculty of Music, University of Manitoba, where he has taught since 2004. As Associate Dean from 2013-2016, he contributed to academic leadership, while his creative practice spans acoustic, electroacoustic, and interdisciplinary performance environments.

Fitzell’s research explores intersections between classical and popular music, with a focus on experimental composition, multimedia installations, and collaborative interdisciplinary projects. His work has been featured at major international festivals and performed by renowned ensembles like eighth blackbird and Ensemble Orchestral Contemporain.
He founded the eXperimental Improv Ensemble (XIE) and co-directs Winnipeg’s new music organization GroundSwell, overseeing concert series and mentorship programs for emerging composers. His recordings have received GRAMMY and Opus Awards, and he has presented scholarly work in Circuit: Musiques contemporaines.
