Glenn Schafe is a Professor and Chair of Psychology at Hunter College, City University of New York (CUNY), within the School of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on the neurobiological mechanisms of emotional learning and memory, particularly fear conditioning and the impact of chronic stress on memory processes. He holds a PhD in Psychology from the University of Washington.
Research Interests: Dr. Schafe’s lab investigates how fear memories are formed, consolidated, and reconsolidated, with emphasis on epigenetic mechanisms (e.g., histone acetylation, DNA methylation) and synaptic plasticity in the amygdala. His work explores the role of molecules like Arc/Arg3.1, p300/CBP histone acetyltransferases, and neurotrophic factors in fear memory modulation. Chronic stress effects on memory stability and potential therapeutic interventions (e.g., curcumin) are also key areas of study.
Labs/Teams: His lab integrates behavioral neuroscience, molecular biology, and electrophysiology to study fear memory circuits. Collaborations focus on translational approaches for PTSD treatment.
