Glenn Ramsey, MD is a Professor in the Department of Pathology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, serving as Director of Transfusion Medicine with dual appointments in Pathology (Transfusion Medicine) and Pathology (Hemostasis). His clinical leadership spans transfusion services across Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, and Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.
Dr. Ramsey's educational foundation includes:
- MD from Case Western Reserve University (1978)
- Medicine Internship at University of Rochester (1979)
- Pathology Residency at University of Rochester (1983)
- Fellowship in Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine at University of Pittsburgh (1984)
Board-certified in Anatomic/Pathology & Clinical Pathology and Blood Banking & Transfusion Medicine, his research pioneers blood group genotyping for antibody testing, revealing critical insights into blood group variants and alloimmunization risks. His team developed innovative systems for blood component recall management and transfusion error prevention in transplants. Current work integrates genomic pathology with clinical hemostasis, emphasizing quality improvement in laboratory testing and evidence-based clinical support protocols.
Recent publications demonstrate concentrated expertise in Rh blood group systems (2025), platelet supply chain vulnerabilities (2024), and serological recognition of RHD variants (2024), reflecting his leadership in advancing transfusion safety standards through molecular diagnostics and national policy frameworks.
His distinguished recognition includes:
- Lifetime Achievement Award, College of American Pathologists (2024)
- Top Poster Award, Association for Advancement of Blood & Biotherapies (2023)
- AABB Annual Meeting Top Posters Award (2015)
- Chang Ling Lee Award, Illinois Association of Blood Banks (2005)
Dr. Ramsey chairs national committees shaping blood banking policy, including the Association for Advancement of Blood & Biotherapies Public Policy Strategy Committee (2025-present) and College of American Pathologists Council for Scientific Affairs (2024-present). His 40+ year career includes continuous service on CDC disaster preparedness panels, NIH advisory boards, and AABB committees focused on transfusion safety, organ transplant compatibility, and mass casualty incident response. The Northwestern Transfusion Medicine service under his direction serves as a national model for integrating genomic pathology with clinical hemostasis.
