He earned his B.A. from George Mason University and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Emory University. His academic work bridges philosophy and mystical traditions, particularly in the context of German Idealism.
His research focuses on the intersections between philosophy and the irrational, especially mysticism, esotericism, and non-discursive forms of knowledge. Key areas include German philosophy from Kant to Heidegger, Western mysticism, Hermeticism, Kabbalah, alchemy, and the philosophical implications of altered states of consciousness. He has made significant contributions through scholarly books and articles that explore Hegel’s engagement with mystical and esoteric currents.
Glenn Magee’s publications reveal a consistent scholarly trajectory centered on Hegel’s philosophy and its connections to hidden intellectual traditions. His works span from detailed studies of Hegelian terminology to broad encyclopedic projects on Western mysticism, demonstrating both depth and interdisciplinary reach. The recurring themes include the limits of reason, the role of myth and poetry in philosophy, and the influence of pre-modern esoteric thought on canonical philosophers.
