معرفی
Professor Giuseppe Schettino is a Professor of Medical Physics at the University of Surrey with a joint appointment at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL). He also holds honorary positions as Senior Lecturer at Queen’s University Belfast and University College London. His academic journey began with a degree in Nuclear Physics from the University of Naples (1994) and a PhD from King’s College London (1999), followed by postdoctoral work at the Gray Cancer Institute and Columbia University. He served as a Lecturer at Queen’s University Belfast (2007–2013) before joining NPL as Principal Research Scientist (2013–2018), where he later became Head of Science for Medical Physics.
Education:
- PhD in Physics, King’s College London, UK (1999)
- Laurea in Nuclear Physics, University of Naples, Italy (1994)
His research focuses on radiation biology, advanced radiotherapy, and dosimetry, with emphasis on MRI-guided radiotherapy, proton and ion beam therapy, microdosimetry, and nanoparticle-based radiosensitization. He leads UK efforts in standardizing dosimetry and QA for preclinical radiotherapy, funded by Innovate UK and supported by CTRad and Cancer Research UK.
His recent publications (2020–2023) reflect a strong trend in preclinical radiotherapy, 3D tumour models, dosimetry innovation, and biological effects of radiation. Key themes include radiomics, magnetic field interactions, and nanoparticle applications in cancer therapy.
Scientific Awards and Recognition:
- No explicitly listed awards, but leadership in nationally funded programs indicates recognition.
He has advised and collaborated with numerous researchers across institutions. Though no formal student list is provided, his senior authorship on multiple studies suggests mentorship roles. He is actively involved in developing anthropomorphic phantoms, end-to-end QA tests, and novel detectors for preclinical research.
Labs and Teams:
- Medical Radiation Group, National Physical Laboratory
- Collaborations with Queen’s University Belfast, UCL, and international radiobiology consortia
- Lead of UK standardization initiatives in preclinical dosimetry
