Dr Giulia Champion is a Research Fellow (Anniversary Fellowship) at the University of Southampton. Her research focuses on Blue Energy and Environmental Humanities, Postcolonial Studies, and Marine Cultural Productions. She leads the project '(Un)Mediating the Ocean,' exploring seabed governance and deep-sea mining frameworks. Her work intersects Just Energy Transition, decolonial methodologies, and underwater cultural heritage.
Education: PhD from the University of Warwick (supervised by Professors Neil Lazarus and Fabienne Viala), MAs from the University of Warwick/Queen Mary University of London and the University of Geneva, and a BA from the University of Geneva.
Research Interests: Ocean governance, decolonial theory, marine cultural heritage, and socio-ecological systems. She collaborates on kelp forest studies and co-convenes networks like Haunted Shores and the Reading Decoloniality Group.
Recent Contributions: Published in Environmental History, Ocean and Society, and People and Nature. Key topics include recognitional justice in ocean policy and transdisciplinary marine identity frameworks.
Awards: Anniversary Fellowship and Green Transition Fellowship (University of Stavanger).
External Roles: Speaker at Royal Society events, volunteer for the International Commission of the History of Oceanography, and collaborator on ecological reparations projects.
