Giovanni van Empel is a Research Fellow at the Department of Health Economics, Wellbeing and Society, Australian National University. His work focuses on health economics and labor economics, particularly examining organizational features of healthcare systems such as hospital competition and peer influence. He is currently investigating the impacts of counter-COVID policies on children's developmental outcomes and mental health through an ARC-funded project.
- PhD in Economics (Health) from Monash Business School, Monash University
- MSc in Health Economics (with Distinction) from the University of York, UK
- Medical Doctor from Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia
His research spans primary interests in healthcare delivery systems and secondary work in development economics, where he co-led a field experiment on vaccine hesitancy. As a registered research supervisor, he contributes to training future population health leaders.
