Gindo Tampubolon is a Reader in Global Health at the Global Development Institute, University of Manchester, where he leads research on healthy ageing and global health challenges. He serves as Lead of the World Health Organization expert group on Life course and healthy ageing and was awarded the Making A Difference Award 2024 for Outstanding Benefit to Society through Research.
His research focuses on healthy ageing, particularly cognitive ageing using longitudinal ageing studies from around the world including the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing, the US Health and Retirement Study, the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe, the Irish Longitudinal Study of Ageing, the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study and the Indonesia Family Life Survey. He also investigates healthy digital dividends, examining how different digital technologies deliver varying benefits to different groups in society and through what mechanisms.
His recent publications reveal a strong focus on life course determinants of health outcomes, with particular attention to frailty, dementia, cardiovascular disease, and the impact of socioeconomic factors on aging populations across diverse cultural contexts.

Professor Tampubolon actively supervises PhD students and postdocs, with a track record of successful doctoral completions. His research is supported by substantial grants including a £4.9M Policy Research Unit in Healthy Ageing funded by the National Institute of Health and Care Research, a €5.9M SENSE-Cog project funded by European Horizon2020, and a £4.8M Neighbourhood and dementia study funded by the National Institute of Health Research.
He is affiliated with multiple research centers including the Manchester Institute for Collaborative Research on Ageing, Dementia@Manchester, and Digital Futures, demonstrating his interdisciplinary approach to addressing global health challenges.
