Gina Gustavsson is a Senior Lecturer and associate professor (docent) at the Department of Government, Uppsala University, where she combines political theory with political psychology in her research. She also serves as an independent columnist for Dagens Nyheter. Her work focuses on contemporary political issues arising from immigration, national identity, patriotism, liberalism, and freedom of speech. She actively engages in public discourse through media appearances and popular publications.
Her research examines:
- National identity construction during crises like the COVID-19 pandemic
- Liberal nationalism's capacity to foster solidarity in diverse societies
- Swedish individualism and its impact on welfare state attitudes
- Historical and contemporary tensions between Enlightenment and Romantic liberalism
- Freedom of speech boundaries in multicultural contexts
Her publications show a consistent focus on national identity dynamics, liberal political theory, and the psychological underpinnings of political attitudes. Recent work emphasizes pandemic responses and immigration, while earlier scholarship explored philosophical foundations of liberty and tolerance.
